Mutaflor® is the only medical probiotic with good E. coli tailored to suit your lower gut and colon, with extensive studies that support clinical efficacy and safety in a wide variety of conditions. Mutaflor® delivers ‘live’ Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 strain in viable form and suitable quantities targeted specifically to the terminal ileum and colon of the human gut.
Nissle 1917 antagonizes and outcompetes a host of pathogens including many strains of bad E. coli, Vibrio cholera, Salmonella typhi, Candida albicans, Lysteria monocytogenes. Nissle 1917 secretes antimicrobials, preferentially acquires iron nutrients from the lower gut microenvironment and forms biofilms that starve off bad bacteria and related pathogens.
Vital and Assertive
Nissle 1917 has 3 fimbriae (structures like suction cups) to attach to one another and form biofilms in the gut. It also has a flagella (tail-like structure) that helps it to swim in the lower gut and attach to the gut cells. Nissle 1917 can live in both oxygenated and oxygen-deprived environments. It also uses 6 different ways to acquire iron nutrition from the lower gut.
Nissle 1917 plays a unique role in modulating human defence systems and facilitating gut response development of newborns, infants and toddlers. In pre-term and full-term babies, Nissle 1917 increases levels of IgA and IgM significantly while preventing bad bacteria and pathogens from colonizing a child’s gut through the first 6 months of life. In adults, Nissle 1917 increases levels of the defensin HBD-2 significantly in the lower gut.
Nissle 1917 reduces gut epithelial cell and microenvironment levels of inflammatory mediators including IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8 along with COX-2/PGE-2. Nissle 1917 also up-regulates IL-10, an important anti-inflammatory mediator increasing protection to mucus linings of lower gut cells and reducing inflammatory damage to tight junctions.
Nissle 1917 protects the lower gut by maintaining inter-gut cell protein development and meshwork barrier so that undesirable substances are not leaked from the gut into the rest of the body. These tight junctions are restored and maintained by Nissle 1917 especially in the presence of bad E. coli that look to damage it.
Nissle 1917 together with other commensal E. coli, ferment carbohydrates and produce chorismate (precursor to folic acid tryptophan, phenylalanine, CoQ10, Vitamin K2). It also produces lactate, succinate and acetate, short chain fatty acids (SCFA) that enhance gut cell metabolism.
Nissle 1917 offers maximal beneficial effects shown in early life (limiting gut pathogen growth), infants and toddlers (diarrhoea) and adults (inflammatory bowel conditions and chronic constipation). Nissle 1917 further facilitates good micro-flora regrowth after antibiotics and protects against travel-related pathogenic E. coli (EHEC, ETEC, STEC, UPEC, EIEC, AIEC etc).
Nissle 1917 is the most extensively studied probiotic E. coli strain in the world with genetic stability and cannot turn bad in the gut unlike other E. coli. It has been used in medicine for almost 100 years with good tolerance and no known age restrictions, applicable to full/pre-term babies and in pregnancy. Mutaflor® as a product, fulfils medical probiotic status and is produced in Germany under Good Manufacturing Practice.
